Tony Wendice: is a failed novelist who married his wealthy wife Margot for her money. He now has had to work as an editor for the publishing firm that represents Maxine. He is handsome, charming, and selfish, and has a jealous and vindictive side that fuels his plan to murder Margot. He is jealous of everyone else’s success around him and desperate to “get his”.
Margot Wendice: is the wealthy wife of Tony. She is very intelligent and often seen as naïve to the true nature of her husband’s intentions. She had a past, brief affair with Maxine during a moment of weakness, but she has believed in her marriage and believed in her husband. She is completely unaware of the darkness inside him. Tony has discovered her infidelity and uses it as a motivation for his plot to murder her.
Maxine Hadley: is a very successful and sought after American Crime novelist. She has a vivid and bold personality and views herself as very daring and ahead of her time. She is the focus of Tony’s jealousy. She can see through Tony and his personality flaws and tries very hard to convince Margot that he is not the right one for her.
Captain Lesgate: is a former schoolmate of Tony’s who attended University around the same time as him. They knew of each other, but previously had not been what we would call friends. He is a con artist and a small time criminal. Tony has uncovered some of Lesgates crimes and he uses this as leverage to blackmail him into murdering Margot.
Inspector Hubbard: is a thoughtful and very thorough police inspector who investigates the crime. He/she may appear eccentric, but they are a sharp and methodical detective who is able to see through Tony’s façade. They have a genuine interest in seeing that justice is done.
